Hi board game geeks! My name’s Doddy and I’m here to help you ‘kickstart’ your Collection by navigating the choppy waters of crowdfunding campaigns! I’ll be looking at which deserve your gold and which you should avoid like an orc encampment! On today’s edition we’ll be looking at Occult card game by Spirit House Society.
So this game landed on my lap and had to play. As we progress through the reviews companies are approaching us. So here it is!! Occult the card game! An absolute game of carnage, chaos with a fast paced approach.
To play the game and win as a cultist you will play a monster or as many as you can from your hand. With a monster in play you’re already doing well. At the start of your turn the monster will rotate. On the third rotation the creature is summoned and you win. Each monster has its own action upon arrival, this has messed me up in a few games. Stupid creature makes you trade your whole hand to person to your right, everyone that is. Now as there is only a few monsters in the deck so there are other ways to summon. Getting an action card with a cultist symbol is great having three and you can summon your own and call them Stanley the five headed dog. Oh and the second win condition is to go on a killing spree and murder all your opponents monsters… well 3 of them. Do that and you win.
Each player is a cultist trying to summon a monster into the city and cause havoc, whilst at the same time preventing their opponents from doing the same. Everyone has 5 cards in their hands at all times. As you take your turn if you have a monster(s) in your hand you must play them. This is a bonus move, then redraw to 5 and take your turn. Players take one action playing a card or three from your hand. Each card has an action on it which will either make the next player skip their turn, move a monster back one space, steal a card or finally trade a card. If you play three of the cards of the same type you get the second ability of the card which makes them more powerful. All the power!!!
The game lasts about 20 minutes in a three player game. I actually want to dive into a 5 player of this as it will add pure carnage and doom. Huge alliances and betrayal. Oh and I forgot the trade. So the card that lets you trade you don’t actually have to hand over the card that you agreed to, talk about trust issues.
So the game is released on the 3rd of September 2019 and ends on the 24th of September. A price has yet to be revealed but, it is a fantastic game. It’s quick, loads of betrayal, constant aggression. Like in the game I was picked on, the cards have quick and easy to follow rules. The artwork is amazing as well I love it massively. So below I have posted a link to their Instagram, their Facebook and the video of us playing the game and having fun, messing up the rules and maybe someone knocked over the camera. Follow them and get ready for a great game and project. There’s also rumours of an expansion already.
