“Why is he shirtless?!”
Let’s get this out of the way right now… I LOVE this film.
Is it a stunning exercise in film making?
A masterclass in tension?
The scariest thing since Hereditary?
But… is it fun and entertaining?
Full of heart?
Mc G isn’t known for making cinematic classics and yet, somehow, The Babysitter nails everything it set out to do and in spades.
It’s gory, funny and downright crazy and yet, it still has a heart.
At it’s core, it’s a coming of age story that just happens to involve ritual sacrifice and a pact with the devil. Something we can all relate to… The chemistry between Samara Weaving and the honestly incredible Judah Lewis, really make this film but the ensemble cast are equally great at portraying all of the obvious horror and comedy tropes with genuine gusto.
Unlike other comedy horrors such as Scary Movie, it’s self aware enough to avoid outright parody, instead relying on the gallows humour of the situation to shine through with a few choice lines to pepper the visual comedy.
If you have a hankering for something fun, grab your popcorn and fire this up on Netflix and I promise you’ll have an absolute blast.
