Hi board game geeks! My name’s Doddy and I’m here to help you ‘kickstart’ your game collection by navigating the choppy waters of crowdfunding campaigns! I’ll be looking at which deserve your gold and which you should avoid like an orc encampment! On today’s edition we’ll be looking at The Gothic Game: Damnation by Black Letter games.
You are lost. It’s dark. There’s a castle up ahead and you’re not alone. Time to get inside, tool up, gather gear and murder the others so you can claim victory!! However, there’s a lot of dangers that lie before you like traps, monsters, curses, each other, the castle itself annnndd maybe a vampire somewhere in the castle…
Start the game with a selection of heirlooms for a one off use. Believe me they are needed.
Seven villains, with their own set of skills and abilities enter the castle for what can only be described as an ‘old school battle royale’! I mean there’s swords, knives and a splattering of ranged weapons.
I have not been able to hold my excitement back on this for a while. This remake of the 1992 classic is amazing. Movement is straightforward, just pick a direction and go. Jump into rooms and gather weapons. Then chase your opponents down and murder them.
The map is pretty big and has 12 rims to dive into. Each room has gear, weapons and a few things that may punish you. Oh and like the classic, there’s intsa-kill items which will take you out the game straight away. Don’t worry about elimination as you get to flip over a deathknell card, which will add a continuous effect to the game… SPOILERS!!! There’s a card which puts a creature in the moat which can kill you, well the others.
The game provides different game types, a very good supply of cards to make for huge replay and grudge matches!!! The game isn’t complicated oh and the castle dice!! So when you roll to move you roll the castle dice. This can increase or decrease your movement(your choice), if you pass over a trap you activate it, nothing and the castle!!! The castle throws out random events that can benefit you but, at a cost.
Items tend to be a one off use, however relics are yours and last. Some cards can make your standard weapons into a relic. There is a huge selection and some even protect you. Combat is done in the hallways unless it’s an open room. Yeah that’s a big change. No hiding in rooms to avoid getting killed. Great spiral staircase is still there and well you can look at that one yourselves when you back it. It’s fun!!!
Then there’s Dracula. He owns the place apparently!! Now if you end up in the vault you become him, well control him and your character naps.. yes that’s a good enough excuse. So he moves differently and faster and ignores most traps and other rules in the game. Rooms will offer you some protection but, cards will allow him access and entry into certain rooms at random intervals. Then he gets his own cards and has X amount of time to kill everyone. You as the player get to roll two movement dice and we’ll 6’s for everyone you roll again and well on a great turn Dracula can cover a lot of ground… a lot!!
Pledge now for £45 plus p&p. The campaign ends on the 25th November. There are early bird pledges which are running for the first week so show your love.
